The game of rugby among women is gaining popularity and the Blue Bulls wants to give more women the opportunity to play the game with several development clinics.
The development office and women’s rugby community would like to establish a rugby team at all schools in Pretoria. The game of rugby among girls is gaining popularity. Girls are given the opportunity to be identified and the first to receive such an opportunity.
TAG rugby
The girls are introduced to TAG rugby, which is a non-contact version of the game. This version is for learning basic skills of the game. This year has seen huge growth with many girls joining clubs in Soshanguve, Tswaing, Nellmapius, Eersterust and Mamelodi. Some of the promising girls have been invited to train with senior teams such as Tuks and the Pretoria club in the Inner City. The task team included a development player in the squad to tour the Reunion Island. It was an experience for the girls from Mamelodi. The sevens’ season has started with trials for both the Provincial Seven’s and the Development Seven’s teams. The teams will play in a few tournaments, one of which is taking place at the Grootvlei sport complex north of Pretoria. This forms part of their recruitment drive according to the Blue Bulls’ strategic plan, which will be made available on request. They plan to visit schools with the aim of introducing the game to young and aspirant girls. The larger the numbers they can create, the bigger the pool to draw players from to make their provincial teams. Teachers can register for introductory coaching courses in various areas.
